This is a hint for the game Raving Manor. Please be warned, the following hint gives information that could be considered a spoiler. For this reason, we would like to caution you about reading the hint unless you are certain that you want to proceed with knowing the information contained herein.
Okay, so you are strolling about a haunted manor, minding your business and trying to escape alive, when suddenly you happen upon these annoying messages on the wall. What's even worse, they appear to be written in some kind of code. What is an adventurer to do without his (or her) trusty pocket Univac handy?
A closer examination of the codes may show that the codes are in a pattern of a linear nature. That is, the letters are in the same sequence, just with a different offset. For example, consider the possible sequence below:
- A u
- B v
- C w
- D x
- E y
- F z
- G a
- H b
- I c
- J d
- K e
- L f
- M g
- N h
- O i
- P j
- Q k
- R l
- S m
- T n
- U o
- V p
- W q
- X r
- Y s
- Z t
So in the above example, the second column letters have an offset of 7 (g = a). Following the code above, "wiif" would spell "COOL" (reading from second column to first). So the answer would be a (somewhat) simple solution of adjusting the offset (note the wraparound) and trying it until it made sense. Of course, since Raving Manor is evil incarnate, no doubt each message will have its own offset position. But that only makes it fun. Another thing to note - the offset position shown above may or may note be a solution to one of the messages.
By trial and error you should be able to decode which offset goes with which wall saying. But as a potential shortcut to this method, I can offer one word, interestingly enough found scribbled on the horribly occupied desk of the good doctor. That word is, "gloxdt".
